Malaysia & Singapore – Borneo, Langkawi, Penang

Day 1

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-track sailing itinerary for Malaysia and Singapore, focusing on Borneo, Langkawi, and Penang, here’s a more adventurous and less touristy route:

Duration: 12 days

Day 1: Arrival in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo

• Arrive in Kota Kinabalu and check in to your accommodation.
• Spend the day exploring the local markets and getting acquainted with the vibrant atmosphere of the city.

Day 2: Kota Kinabalu to Pulau Tiga

• Depart from Kota Kinabalu to Pulau Tiga.
• Anchor near Pulau Tiga and explore the island’s unique volcanic mud baths and off-the-beaten-path hiking trails.

Day 3: Pulau Tiga to Labuan

• Sail to Labuan and spend the day exploring the island’s lesser-known spots.
• Visit some secluded beaches and enjoy the tranquility.

Day 4: Labuan to Brunei

• Sail to Brunei and explore the less touristy areas of the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan.
• Visit local markets and immerse yourself in the culture.

Day 5: Brunei to Miri (Borneo)

• Depart for Miri, but instead of staying in the city, venture into the Bornean jungle nearby.
• Go on a jungle trek or river exploration for a unique experience.

Day 6: Miri to Gunung Mulu National Park

• Sail to Gunung Mulu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its caves and karst formations.
• Take a guided tour of some of the lesser-known caves, away from the main tourist trails.

Day 7: Gunung Mulu National Park to Bako National Park

• Sail to Bako National Park on the island of Borneo.
• Take a hike through the rainforest and keep an eye out for wildlife like proboscis monkeys and pitcher plants.

Day 8: Bako National Park to Kuching

• Sail to Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, and spend the day exploring the city’s cultural attractions and local markets.

Day 9: Kuching to Pulau Satang

• Head to Pulau Satang, a lesser-known island with beautiful coral reefs.
• Snorkel or dive in the crystal-clear waters, and if you’re lucky, you might spot sea turtles.

Day 10: Pulau Satang to Langkawi

• Sail to Langkawi and explore the island’s hidden gems.
• Visit less popular beaches and enjoy some peaceful moments amidst nature.

Day 11: Langkawi Exploration

• Rent a scooter or a bicycle to explore the rural areas of Langkawi.
• Discover secluded waterfalls, local villages, and picturesque viewpoints.

Day 12: Langkawi to Penang

• Sail to Penang and explore some lesser-known parts of the island.
• Visit rural villages and enjoy authentic local cuisine.
