ST VINCENT is the mother ship of her little fleet of islands – the Grenadines. It is a land of volcanos and rainforest, scented by brilliant flowers with bursts of colour from exotic plants and tiny humming birds, Richly fertile, its steeply graded hillsides rise straight out of a sapphire sea and are lush with a tangle of tropical flora or terraced to produce the rich variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs which provide the backbone to this island’s economy

Eco-tourism is gently manifesting its presence. There are no big hotels or package holidays. There are no ‘package people’. Whale watching, swimming in pools beneath waterfalls and hiking the magnificent Soufrière volcano fill the days while the nights are spent listening to steel bands or eating dinner to the sound of tree frogs and lapping waves.

Its history is rich. Originally settled by the Arawak and Carib Indians, many of whom still live here, it was then colonised by the British in the late 1800’s and only regained its independence in 1976. There is an intriguing cultural blend of Carib, English and African which is illustrated in the faces of the ‘Vincies’.
